Goldthwait Reservation is a private, non profit land trust created in 1947 by Dr. Joel Goldthwait to preserve and maintain the natural setting of approximately 12 acres, comprised of Goldthwait Beach, the surrounding land area and the saltwater marsh. At the time, Dr. Goldthwait was being urged to sell this land as parcels for development. The Reservation was his response.
Goldthwait Reservation is managed by an all volunteer Board of Directors and officers, elected annually, whose responsibilities include the day-to-day management and maintenance of the property. A lifelong, elected Board of Trustees are responsible for long range planning and vision, and are in place to ensure that the management of Goldthwait Reservation holds true to its founder?s original character and vision.
The Goldthwait Reservation is actually private, not public property, although Dr. Goldthwait?s intention was to preserve this area for the recreation and enjoyment of the townspeople of Marblehead. It is not subsidized or maintained in any way by the Town of Marblehead.
