A Brief History of Swampscott, MA
Swampscott, Massachusetts is a town of 14,412, located 13 miles north of Boston in the beautiful North Shore area of the Bay State.
Swampscott was first settled in 1629. The name is derived from what the Naumkeag American Indians called the area: ?M?sqiompsk,? which means ?red rock.? Swampscott was originally part of Lynn until separating from Lynn in 1852 and becoming its own town. Swampscott was known as a fishing village for much of its history.
Beginning in the 1800?s, grand resorts and hotels were built and Swampscott became known as a summer vacation spot. President Calvin Coolidge established ?White Court? in Swampscott as his yearly summer home.
Swampscott residents have shown a knack for invention over the years, especially relating to the fishing industry. The ?lobster pot? and ?Swampscott Dory? (a type of fishing boat) were invented in the town.
