A Brief History of Peabody, MA
Peabody, Massachusetts is a city of 47,079, located 18 miles north of Boston in the beautiful North Shore area of the Bay State.
Peabody was first settled sometime between 1626 and 1633. It started out as a part of Salem known as "Brooksby Village." Peabody was included in the area that broke away from Salem in 1752 to become the town of Danvers. In 1855, Peabody separated from Danvers and was officially incorporated as its own town called "South Danvers." The name of South Danvers was short-lived, however. Just thirteen years later, it was renamed "Peabody" in honor of successful businessman and philanthropist George Peabody. While George Peabody resided elsewhere most of his life, he was born in South Danvers and made several generous gifts to the town he was born in. In 1916, Peabody was incorporated as a city.
Peabody was involved in the leather and tanning industries almost from its settlement. Evidence points to tanning having begun in Peabody by 1638. Over the ensuing centuries, the leather and tanning industries would grow markedly, earning Peabody the nicknames "The Leather City" and "Tanner City." At one point, Peabody had over 100 tanneries.
Today, Peabody is known as the home of the beautiful North Shore Mall. The city has an abundance of shopping in addition to the mall, houses many businesses, and is a beloved home to its residents.
