A Brief History of Danvers, MA
Danvers, Massachusetts is a town of 25,212, located 17 miles north of Boston in the beautiful North Shore area of the Bay State.
Danvers was first settled in the 1630?s and was originally known as ?Salem Village.? At the time, the modern day Salem was known as ?Salem Town.? Most of those accused of being witches in the Salem witch trials lived in Salem Village, now Danvers. In 1757, Danvers was established as its own town.
Militiamen from Danvers, led by Captains Edmund Putnam and Asa Prince, participated in the fighting that began at Lexington on April 19, 1775, ambushing British soldiers who were marching through Arlington on their way back to Boston. (Danvers was the most distant town to participate). 7 of the militiamen were killed in the day?s fighting. Hundreds of residents of Danvers fought valiantly in the Revolutionary War before it ended. Danvers is the birthplace of General Israel Putnam, who led American troops at the Battle of Bunker Hill and is famous for ordering his troops at the battle, "Don't fire til you see the whites of their eyes."
Danvers is home to the Glen Magna Estate, which was established in 1812 by the wealthy merchant Joseph Peabody. The estate, also known as Glen Magna Farms, includes a mansion and beautiful gardens, as well as the Derby Summer House, designed by renowned architect Samuel McIntire.
Danvers is also known for two famous garden crops ? the Danvers half-long carrot and the Danvers onion.
