History of 69 Boston Street:

old photo of 69 boston street, salem

In the late 1600s, the land on which the house was built “had been
part of the Salem common lands, generally part of the Great pasture,
which extended southerly toward Lynn and Marblehead and was used for
grazing of sheep and cattle,” according to Robert Booth of Historic Salem, Inc.
On October 21, 1729 Samuel Pope, Jr., a local blacksmith and son of a
mariner Quaker, bought the 28-rod lot of land from Joseph Thrasher.
Between 1729 and 1735 Samuel Pope, Jr., built this Georgian-style Colonial.
The house was passed onto Joshua Goodale, a prosperous shoemaker,
in February of 1739. After 103 years in the ownership of the Goodales,
the house passed out of the family into the hands of Charles Warren Turner,
a local currier and tenant of the house, in July of 1844. For many decades more,
the house remained in the Turner family.

This Georgian-style colonial is one of the few pre-revolutionary residences
that remain on Boston Street, and is rare survivor of Salem’s early Quaker
community. The Gallows Hill Neighborhood Group nominated it in 2003 to
the Historic Salem’s Most Endangered List. Later that year renovations began.
In 2005, an agreement was reached to transfer the house to Historic Salem, Inc.
Preservation Restriction held by Historic Salem Inc. will protect the exterior and
historical interior, like the chimneys and the beautifully restored,
original master staircase connecting the second and third.
